Stellar and Planetary Aberration
نویسنده
چکیده
For some time the writer has been seeking improved understanding of the several kinds of aberration—these being rather superficially explained in most texts, particularly texts of relativity theory. Indeed, in some of the more highly regarded of these (e.g., Møller 1972) the phenomenon of stellar aberration is so slightingly treated that use of the formulas provided would literally yield wrong answers. During much of this investigation it seemed that the fault lay with special relativity theory or with the Lorentz transformation. This may still, or may not, be the case. The reader will have to judge. Interest particularly in stellar aberration has increased of late [cf., Ives 1950, Eisner 1967, Phipps 1989, Hayden 1993, etc.] With help from recent studies by Marmet (1994) and Sherwin (1993) it has become apparent to the writer that with suitable interpretation relativity theory can accommodate both principal types of optical aberration, planetary and stellar. The purpose of the present paper is to confirm this assertion, to exhibit stellar aberration as (in a sense) a limiting case of planetary aberration, to seek a physical model of the phenomenon, to describe observations that could be made to test the model, and to touch on residual aberration issues that remain unsettled in the context of relativity theory.

We address the issue of relativistic stellar aberration requirements for the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). Motivated by the importance of this issue for SIM, we have considered a problem of relative astrometric observations of two stars separated by angle θ on the sky with a single baseline interferometer. While a definitive answer on the stellar aberration issue may be obtained only in n...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملPlanetary nebulae as probes of the chemical impact of AGB stars
Planetary nebulae (PN) represent the evolutionary fate of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stellar envelopes, thus are ideally suited to study the chemical impact of AGB stars. Stellar evolution predict elemental enrichment through the AGB evolution, and convective dredge-up episodes allow the products of stellar evolution to reach the stellar outer layers. Planetary nebulae are probes of thes...
متن کاملElectron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy of Iron Nanoparticles in Lunar Soil using an Aberration-Corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope
Introduction and Motivation: Mineral grains on the surfaces of airless planetary bodies like the Moon are subjected to continuous radiation processing from solar energetic ions and also experience micrometeorite impact events. Together these processes alter the morphology, chemistry, and microstructure of surface particles and are collectively known as space weathering [1]. The optical properti...
متن کاملThe Geometry of Karbandi in Persian Architecture; Response to the Challenges of Conventional and Stellar Karbandi
Karbandi is one of the original and ancient arched elements in Persian architecture which is formed based on a network with harmonic geometry and in addition to architectural function, it also has structural behavior. However, there are ambiguities about the geometry of this architectural element that should be addressed with targeted research. One of these ambiguities is to determine how the g...
